What is Spousal Sponsorship?

Spousal sponsorship is a process that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner to come and live with them in Canada as permanent residents. It is a pathway to reunite families and enables spouses or partners to live together in Canada.

Who can Apply?

To be eligible to apply for spousal sponsorship, both the sponsor and the sponsored person must meet certain requirements.

The sponsor must:

  1. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  2. Be at least 18 years old.
  3. Not be in prison, bankrupt, under a removal order, or under a sponsorship undertaking default.
  4. Not have previously sponsored another spouse or common-law partner within the past five years.
  5. Meet the minimum necessary income requirements to demonstrate the ability to support the sponsored person.

The sponsored person must:

  1. Be the spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner of the sponsor.
  2. Be at least 18 years old.
  3. Not be closely related by blood to the sponsor.
  4. Not have any criminal convictions or serious health issues that could make them inadmissible to Canada.
